The difference is in details most people cannot name but everyone notices: silk facings on the lapel, a matching braid down the trouser, no belt loops, and a single button that closes on a clean line.
Hired tuxedos get all of this roughly right and the fit entirely wrong. A dinner jacket sits closer to the body than a business suit, so a borrowed one shows every centimetre it was cut for somebody else. Yours is cut to your own pattern, with the lapel width, the facing cloth and the trouser line settled in your front room rather than chosen off a rail.
Six to eight weeks later it hangs in your wardrobe, ready for the next invitation rather than the next hire shop. Black tie comes round more often than most men expect - and this one already fits. Your tailor visits your home and settles the choices that decide an evening suit: peak or shawl, satin or grosgrain, black or midnight blue. Fourteen precise measurements are taken.
Around 90 minutesYour pattern is cut and the dinner suit built by hand, with the lapel facing, trouser braid and covered buttons finished to match. Cloth is chosen for how it reads under artificial light.
Around 6-8 weeksYour tailor returns with the finished suit and checks it standing, seated and with your arms raised, because that is how an evening is actually spent.

The code as written, and the one with the least room to improvise. A single-button dinner jacket in black or midnight barathea, silk-faced lapel, braided trouser with no turn-up, and a hand-tied black bow. Everything else is quiet by design.
An invitation to bring something of your own to a fixed silhouette. The shape stays traditional; the cloth is where the licence sits. Velvet, deep green, burgundy or a patterned jacquard, worn with formal black trousers so the evening still reads as black tie.
Summer balls, marquees and anywhere the evening is spent outdoors. An ivory or off-white dinner jacket with a shawl collar, worn with the same black formal trousers - and cut in a lighter, more open weave so it behaves after the second course.
Black tie is a narrow code, and the choices inside it are what make one dinner suit look considered and another look borrowed. All of them are settled at your consultation.

Book a ConsultationTuxedos start from £680. That is a starting price - the final cost depends on your cloth, the facing silk, the lining and any personalisation. We discuss it openly at your consultation, so there are no surprises. Two or three hires usually cost more than owning one outright.
None - they are the same garment. "Dinner suit" is the British term and "tuxedo" the American one, and both describe a jacket with silk-faced lapels worn with braided formal trousers. You will hear "dinner jacket" used for the jacket on its own, particularly when it is velvet or ivory.
Both are correct. Midnight blue was designed for artificial light, where it reads richer and slightly darker than black rather than flattening out - which is why it photographs so well indoors. Black is the more traditional choice and the safer one if you own only one dinner suit. Your tailor will show you both in the light of your own home.
A peak lapel is the more formal and the more structured of the two, and it lifts the shoulder line, which suits most builds. A shawl collar is softer and slightly more relaxed, and it sits particularly well on velvet and ivory jackets. A notch lapel is the one to avoid - it belongs on a business suit.
Most dinner suits are completed within six to eight weeks of the first consultation, so we recommend booking around eight to ten weeks before the event. That leaves room for the final fitting and any adjustments. Tighter timelines can usually be accommodated - it is worth asking rather than assuming.
White tie is a separate and stricter code: a black tailcoat that fastens nowhere, a white marcella waistcoat, a wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie. It appears at state occasions, some livery dinners and a handful of balls. For daytime formal wear, see morning dress. We make it to commission - mention it when you book and your tailor will bring the appropriate cloths.
